Chemical and dangerous material spills can pose a risk to humans and the environment. If you’re involved in an industry where transporting, processing, or vending hazardous material is part of your operation, you’re going to need a spill containment plan as well as equipment like an absorbent spill kit to ensure that safety standards are always met, and you’re ready to respond to any situation.
A hazmat spill kit is essential to contain a dangerous spill, and make the affected area safe as soon as possible to minimize damage and environmental impact. A hazmat spill kit works by containing a spill, and absorbing the dangerous liquids. Hazmat spill kits are effective because they cover a wide range of materials, ranging from oils and synthetic lubricants, to acids and liquid fuels.
Your hazmat kit will usually come in a variety of configurations, depending on your needs. The size of a spill kit is usual determined by your ‘worst case scenario’ spill. So with variables considered, your kit might be as small as 5gallons in capacity, up to 95gallons for larger spills, or a combination of different sizes, for different site areas, or equipment.
At the bare minimum, your kit will consist of a container, and absorbent materials, like absorbent pads, pillows and socks, or sometimes absorbent compounds like pellets and absorbent pulps. Depending on the chemicals that you’re dealing with, you can customize your kit by adding additional equipment. Some of this could include:
- Neutralizing powders and absorbents which minimize vapors, allowing for a safer cleanup.
- Special treatment liquids for neutralizing specific chemicals. These are excellent for laboratories.
- Dry acid neutralizers, which can be used on larger spills to contain the spill, and increase safety for cleanup crews.
- Respirators. If you’re dealing with especially dangerous and aggressive chemicals, where neutralizers aren’t enough, you might need respirator equipment to ensure safety during cleanup.
- Goggles. Goggles are also necessary equipment to ensure safety with more aggressive chemicals.
- Nitrile gloves, or chemical specific safety gloves, along with boots, can be included in your kit to provide cleanup crew with the best protection against solvents and chemicals.
By ensuring that you place a spill kit in any risk area, or on equipment like transporters or tankers, and then combining this with an emergency spill response plan that all on site staff are trained on, you can be sure in knowing that you’re prepared to react quickly to any spill. Having a plan and the right equipment will minimize human accidents and injury, as well as reducing any negative impact to a site or the surrounding environment.
