Getting the right safety training for your employees

The importance of safety training in the work place cannot be overemphasized considering its benefits for both the employer and the employees, said benefits of which include higher worker productivity, lower absentee rates, and greater profits. But don’t rush into safety training either because it must be carefully planned, executed and evaluated for optimum results.

Here are a few tips for getting the right safety training for your employees in the workplace.

Decide on the Training Requirements

For safety training to be successful,it must be designed according to the present requirements and future goals of the company in general and the people in particular. You should then adopt a proactive approach by:

  • Determining your organization’s training priorities. You should be able to identify the actual safety training that the employees require such as for fire safety, natural disaster safety, or materials handling safety.
  • Identifying the employees who will benefit the most from the proposed safety training in the work place. Keep in mind that each category of employees in your work place will most likely have particular training needs (e.g., new recruits, employees changing jobs, and health and safety representatives). You may then change the standard training modules according to the needs of the participants.
  • Deciding on the best resource persons for the job. Be sure to check into the professionals’ credentials for obvious reasons.

Basically, you want to ensure that the right employees are getting the right safety training in the work place from the right people at the right time. This way, the organization can enjoy effective and efficient safety training programs!

Experts suggest asking the employees/prospective participants about their opinion of the training program. You will be surprised by the inputs coming from them, said inputs of which are essential in fine-tuning the proposed program and, hence, in getting optimum results.

Deliver the Training Program

Of course, the employees should undergo the training program! Their training should preferably be conducted during working hours so that practical applications can be made. They should also be provided with plenty of opportunities to engage in discussions regarding the training lessons because interactivity is still one of the best ways to learn.

But don’t just stop there! You should also evaluate and monitor the impact of the safety training in the work place on your employees so that you can fine-tune the program, where possible.
