Fire safety in the home

One of the most important things that you can teach your children from a very young age is safety. The home can be a haven. It is and should be the place where you feel the most safe and protected.

It is unfortunate that the home can also be one of the places where the most accidents and injuries take place. Making sure that your kids know what to do in the event of a fire emergency is imperative. Getting your kids into a fire safe routine from the start is just the best way to go.

In every home there should be fire alarms which are checked monthly. Try to check them on the same day to ensure that you don’t forget to check batteries and function to keep the home secure.

Your kids should know what to do in the event of a fire. Let them know that the firemen aren’t going to look like a normal person. Many firefighters tell of entering a home to rescue a child and having the child hide from them because they are afraid of the mask and the air packs. If possible, take your child to visit a fire station and ensure that they know what a firefighter will look like when they are wearing their full gear. This will help them to remain calmer when firefighters must enter the home.

Designate what exits and entries should be used in the event of a fire emergency. Set a meeting place for everyone to meet once they are outside the building so that everyone knows that the entire family is safe once they are outdoors. Making sure that you stress to your child that once they are outside the home that they do not go back inside no matter what is an important part of the learning process.

Teaching your kids to be safe is a big part of being a parent. Practice fire safety on a regular basis and make sure that everyone knows what to do in the event of a fire emergency in the home.
